It was not the first page my fingers randomly opened to. It was the third. Perhaps only because of my ignorance, the first page I opened to did not seem to have anything relevant to me. But, as my eyes focused upon the text of the second page, I realized that I had happily found myself again in the Book of Isaiah, and--as I read the following from Chapter 37--they felt strangely familiar to me:
Have you not heard?
Long ago, I prepared it.
From days of old, I planned it.
Now I have brought it to pass.
Become like the plants of the field,
Like the green growth.
I am aware whether you stand or sit;
I know whether you come or go.
Had I not read these passages before? Was my beloved verse not close by? I eagerly flipped to the next subsequent page, and sure enough, there it was for me:
This shall be a sign for you:
This year you shall eat the aftergrowth,
Next year, what grows of itself
But in the third year, sow and reap,
Plant vineyards and eat their fruit!
I love that my little verse ends in a joyful exclamation mark! But what does it all mean? And how should I apply this to my life? I meet with my new spiritual director (a wonderful Redemptorist priest named Father John) this coming Wednesday, and I am hoping he will shed some light on it for me.
I fell asleep shortly after encountering the verse, and my Rosary CD played on. Later, when I woke up, I noticed that my Rosary had again folded itself into a little heart. :-)
