Yesterday was freaky.A man almost died at the base of my apartment staircase.
He was standing at the top of it, maybe only 4 or 5 steps down, ready to hold onto the big honking beast as soon as the guy at the top of the stairs lowered the dolly down.
But the dude at the top lowered the dolly down too low. Within seconds, before any of us could utter a sound, the refrigerator was rapidly shooting down my staircase.
It all happened so quickly. The older man, who was standing on the steps beneath the refrigerator, flashed immediately from our view, covered up by the plummeting death trap.
The thing made such a huge sound as it slid, cutting up my carpet as it went. I could do nothing but stare, my eyes expecting to see a man crushed before me.
The refrigerator busted out my door, flew down the concrete steps outside (while taking chunks of the concrete with it), and skidded across the parking lot. Had my car been parked in its usual spot, the refrigerator surely would have plowed directly into it.
But where was the man? I ran down the flight of stairs, and I looked out my door in horror, not knowing what I'd see.
There he was, grabbing his chest, breathing heavily like he had just watched his life flash before him. He was standing, and he was staring at his legs with these wide-open eyes, as if he was astounded that those legs had managed to run backwards down my flight of steps, over the threshold, down the concrete steps, and into the parking lot, miraculously side-stepping the large metal ramp that connected the truck to my doorway. He was OK, just shook up, and in definite need of a cold beer, he said, his joking breaking the silence of what had been our terror. I offered him a glass of water, but of this he could not think, for he was so grateful for his life that I think he was distracted by the very thought of still having it.
Our blessings counted, there was nothing more for the men to do but load the 'fridge onto the truck and leave.
I then ran into my apartment and cried. Truly the angels do live among us, and some of them must be very strong.
