The Shellac-ing Party

The last party I threw at my apartment was quite a unique one.

It was a shellac-ing party, and it was held at 9 AM when most normal people would be at work.

Only two people RSVP'd favorably.

As the name implies, the festivities included spraying shellac, painting shellac, and dunking objects in shellac.

Here's how the invitation read on Facebook:

Do you have something precious that you want to preserve forever? Then cover your special keepsakes in several coats of PLASTIC!

Join us for a Shellac-ing Party held outside on Lisa's apartment deck, the last party at this location! Bring whatever items you wish to make immortal, and Lisa will provide the shellac!

Whether it's spray-on or paint-on, your items are sure to be well-covered and protected, and they will probably outlast you!

Don't have anything you want to preserve? Then come anyhow and help me apply several coats to 17 cupcakes, 1 donut, 1 cookie, a dozen yellow marshmallow Peeps, 1 giant pear, and a blue birdcage!

The party will sure to be a unique delight!

At first, I didn't think anyone was going to show up to my nearly fictional party. So I kept sleeping in.

But the doorbell did ring, and thus I had to wear my pajamas to the party. (Oops!)

For snacks, I served my guests cupcakes, marshmallow Peeps, cookies, and donuts. But Andy and Shawn were wise to the fact that these items were quite stale, having dried out in my oven for over a year. Gosh, these guys know me so well! And so, instead of biting into them, they doused them in shellac. :-)

With shellac, I waterproofed the beautiful gord birdhouse that Mom had made into a giant pair, and this would be my first birdcage ever hung on my property!

I also painted baby dove Meek's blue birdcage which I had picked up at Rehoboth Beach.

Next on my project to-do list is to shellac the 2-foot statue of St. Joseph and Baby Jesus that sits outside my new house kitchen door.

And then I shall repaint the outside of a beautifully white porcelain clawfoot bathtub which I have lovingly named Clifford.

What I loved most about this party was the reaffirming realization that I have two wonderful friends who will do things that they normally wouldn't do simply because they matter to me.

And what a blessing that is!

A true friend is more valuable than gold and has more staying-power than anything covered in shellac!
