The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Last weekend, I had the joy of celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Spanish and Mexican Americans at San Juan Bautista Iglesia Católica.

The faith, friendliness, and joy of these people impresses me so much.  When I visited Mexico a few years ago, I truly fell in love with these people.

Sitting in the pew before me was a young Mexican man my age, who carried with him a bouquet of one dozen long-stem red roses.

After Mass, I watched him walk alone to the image of Mary and place at her feet his contribution of the gift flowers.  He knelt down on his knees, held his head with hands, and prayed silently.  I was so touched!

In most white parishes, it seems that the flowers for the altar are ordered, placed, and paid for by the church, using money previously collected from the parishioners.  But in this parish, the church did not need to go out and buy flowers for Our Lady.  The priest must have known that the faithful people would arrive bearing them.  And they did!!  :)
