Last night I had a reminder of how our guardian angels are surely with us at every moment.
Michael and I were driving home from New Jersey, having recently flown into the Newark Airport from North Carolina.
It was pitch black on his parents' road at this late hour. A two-hour journey was ahead of us, but we were warm, alert, and well-fed.
We had just eaten, bundled ourselves up, and were well-rested from a long sleep the night before. Praise God for all of that! Indeed, we would need all of our faculties for what was to come.
Suddenly, a deer darted out of the forest and onto the road before us. Michael immediately slammed on his breaks and began to swerve the car, first to the right, then to the left, and then back to the right again.
A mailbox and telephone pole were only a few yards ahead of us. My eyes were wide open, my arms bracing myself for the impact. And then it came.
With a loud SLAM, the deer hit the passenger side of the car, and its body flung up over onto the hood of the car.
Incredibly, the deer's body came to rest BEFORE hitting or breaking the windshield, and the deer was still alive. As soon as it could, the deer jumped back onto it's feet and ran awkwardly back into the forest, its friend following after him.
Praise God, neither Michael nor I was hurt. The car also had zero damage. It was a miracle.
We said a little prayer for the hurt deer, hoping that--if he had broken legs or ribs--they would somehow heal soon and allow him to live a long life.
