A Mother's Love

A mother's love is so vast and deep, competing only with the ocean.  I wanted to share with you a cute little story of my friend Britta's love for her eldest son, Xavier.

Back in the Summer, Britta began working on Xavier's Halloween costume.  He was to be St. Michael the Archangel, and the costume she sewed was elaborate, detailed, and heartfelt.  We all knew that her homemade costume was going to rock the socks off of everybody else's.

But then, at the last minute (like just now), precious Xavier said he wanted to be a fan

Yes, a fan.  And, more specifically: a mechanical, axial-and-propeller ceiling fan.

You see, this 3-year-old boy has been obsessed with fans and air conditioners for about two-thirds of his life.  His greatest reward for good behavior is to take a stroll with his parents around the perimeter of utility buildings to savor the sounds and workings of industrial-strength cooling systems.  Or, if not that, then the neighbor's window unit will do.  Amazing.

So, ever-loving as this mama is, she swallowed the lump in her throat, threw the St. Michael costume aside, got to work immediately, and faithfully delivered this, complete with a pull-chain:

Oh, to have a little boy!  And for a little boy to have a loving mother!  What a joy.
